The Southern Poverty Law Center, which is an IRS-recognized nonprofit organization, has reportedly been stashing millions in the Cayman Islands, according to an investigative report by the Washington Free Beacon. It also allegedly funnels cash to the British Virgin Island and Bermuda.
Based on 2015 records accessed by the Beacon, the most recent data apparently available, the SPLC that claims to be dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and seeking equal justice for vulnerable members of society, has $328 million in assets but spent only $61,000 on legal services. At the same time, it paid out $20 million in salaries.
Despite its nice-sounding name, the SPLC seems to be in the business of characterizing any right-leaning entity as a hate group because to function as other than a left-wing, progressive advocate is unacceptable to it, Natural News has previously suggested.
Similarly, the Beacon provides some background on the organization.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is perhaps best known for its “hate map,” a collection of organizations the nonprofit deems “domestic hate groups” that lists mainstream conservative organizations alongside racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and is often referenced in the media. A gunman opened fire at the Washington, D.C., offices of the conservative Family Research Council in 2012 after seeing it listed as an “anti-gay” group on SPLC’s website.
Fake news CNN, among other such “mainstream” outlets, has helped publicize the hate map promulgated by the SPLC.
In the aftermath of the Charlottesville violence, the SPLC has raked in big bucks in donations from gullible, virtue-signalling corporations such as Apple and JP Morgan Chase.
In an appearance with Tucker Carlson on the Fox News Channel, Beacon writer Joe Schoffstall — who noted that the tax-exempt organization now makes all its money from the “hate industry” — revealed that SPLC’s accountant hung up on him when he requested further information on SPLC’s offshore accounts. The SPLC itself has not responded to a request for comment as yet.
One expert told the Beacon that “It seems extremely unusual for a ‘501(c)(3)’ concentrating upon reducing poverty in the American South to have multiple bank accounts in tax haven nations.” Another expert questioned the ethics of the arrangement, adding that “I know of no legitimate reason for any U.S.-based nonprofit to put money in overseas, unregulated bank accounts.”
Similarly, in the above-referenced FNC interview, Tucker Carlson referred to the SPLC as a “totally fake organization,” and wondered why it hasn’t shared its windfall with the poor people it purports to serve. (Related: Read more about far-left propaganda at LiberalMob.com.)
Several Christian groups as well as British Muslim reformer Maajid Nawaz are suing the SPLC for defamation, PJ Media reports. Nawaz says the organization accused him of being an anti-Muslim extremist.
According to The Daily Caller, the SPLC has identified 10 military bases, including Fort Hood, Fort Bragg, and Fort Benning which were named after Confederate military leaders, as Confederate monuments that need to be taken down.
