Conservative commentators talk all the time about the dangers of the progressive left and their decades-long plot to fundamentally transform America. By this point, many Americans are fully aware of the fact that the core objective of these leftists is to do away with the Constitution and essentially brainwash the public into embracing the establishment of a totalitarian state. But one thing that is not discussed nearly as much as it should be is the question of whether or not this progressive plot is working. Are more and more Americans really starting to accept the idea that surrendering our liberty to a centralized state will make the country stronger? Sadly, there is a strong argument to be made that yes, that is exactly what is happening.
According to a recent McLaughlin & Associates poll, nearly one third of Americans agree that conservative organizations should be censored by Internet companies based on the fact that they were recently published on a “hate group” list put out by the Southern Poverty Law Center. When asked whether or not “Internet companies should use this list to censor or suppress mainstream and non-violent conservative groups by denying them access to their service,” an astonishing 32 percent of Americans answered “yes.” Notably, 43 percent said that conservative organizations should not be suppressed, and 25 percent had no opinion on the matter.
But even though the number of Americans that don’t believe in censoring conservatives outweighs the number of Americans that do, the fact of the matter is that 32 percent is still much too high a number. The idea that nearly one third of the American people support stripping others of their free speech rights simply because they disagree with them politically is absolutely disgraceful. (Related: Silicon Valley is tightening its grip on free speech.)
Without a doubt, the people that consist of this 32 percent figure believe in censoring conservative voices because they feel that the spread of “hate speech” is damaging to our country. The problem with this is twofold. First, just because a left wing organization like the Southern Poverty Law Center labels certain conservative groups as “hate groups” doesn’t make it so. A conservative organization that speaks out against ISIS is not islamophobic; it is a website that is concerned about the spread of radical Islam and Shariah Law. A conservative organization that supports traditional marriage is not homophobic; it is a site that defines marriage as being between one man and one woman. In other words, a conservative organization isn’t a “hate group” simply because it disagrees with the progressive agenda.
Second, while the spread of real hate speech truly is damaging to any society, what’s even more damaging is when free speech is suppressed or silenced by corporate elitists or the federal government. Since the birth of our country, free speech has been a cornerstone of our Republic and a safeguard of our liberty; now, sadly, it is under attack like never before. (Related: The time has come to stop the war on the freedom of speech.)
Truth be told, this is a key component of the progressive plot to fundamentally transform the United States of America. They are on a mission to make as many Americans as humanly possible give up on the idea of individual liberty, and instead bow down to the statists in exchange for a false sense of equality and security. The progressives use this strategy on a whole host of other issues as well, including gun control (“give us your guns and we will make you safe”), the freedom of religion (“no prayer in public places so that no one becomes offended”) and the environment (“follow our regulations so that we can all do our part to save the planet”).
Liberty is a very precious thing, and it’s an absolute shame that so many Americans seem so eager to throw it all away without a second thought.
